The implementation of these programs can improve lives while students are in school and after they graduate. For example: |
• “Social and emotional skills affect performance in school and the workplace.” James Heckman, Nobel laureate in Economic Sciences.
Knowing that evidence-based programs exist for preventing youth violence and developing positive adult conflict resolution behaviors, our goal is to make these programs as prevalent and as strong as possible in our schools.

• 8,248 students participated in bullying prevention programs
• 7,517 were taught to respect themselves and others

• 169 students were taught to be peer mediators and they mediated 609 disputes
• 194 school personnel were trained in methods of restorative discipline for working through conflicts between offenders and people that have been hurt
• 136 school personnel were trained in the Second Step program, a curriculum that research has shown is effective at reducing aggressive behaviors in children.
• 100 school personnel were trained in the Olweus Bullying Prevention Program, a program that research has shown reduces bullying throughout a school.
Examples of student learning include:
• During the first presentation, only 20% of students could identify options for handling bullying situations. Following the second presentation, 75% of students could identify options. Ogilvie Elementary School
• 68% of fourth graders can list three things to try to calm one-self down when angry. Richardson Elementary School
The following statements from students also reflect what students learned:
“Sometimes I bullied the second grader before bully prevention. I haven’t bullied since.”
“My son, Ben, said, 'I'm sure glad we had classes in conflict resolution. I use what we were taught all the time.'"
“A student told me she hates me because of my religion. I felt bad. Now I know that I can stand up for myself and help others understand more about me.”
“What I learned in conflict management is that it is a conscious decision to live your life a certain way.”
“I learned how to control my anger. I also learned how harmful bullying and cheating can be to others. Thank you for teaching me this.”
“I learned that if somebody is teasing you, you can tell them to stop instead of fighting them. I also learned that if somebody keeps teasing you over and over, that's bullying and you should tell an adult.”
“I learned how to handle my anger issues, to calm down and how to handle consequences.”

“Continued Peace Maker Foundation funding is absolutely critical to Highview. The more we can do to educate the students at this very important age, when they’re just coming into their own decision making years, the better chance we’ll have at creating responsible, civil and empathetic citizens who will lead our future.”

Principal, Highview Middle School
“As a parent of a child who has been bullied, I am grateful to know that the schools are addressing this as the serious issue that it is. My child suffers from anxiety that can be directly attributed to the bullying he faces at school because of his weight.”
